The Next Step in Solar Fire Protection
Helping you choose the right type of detection
Fire detection is rapidly becoming the standard for commercial PV installations, driven by insurer requirements and the need to detects faults and overheating before they escalate, causing irreparable damage. The likes of Allianz, Aviva, and Zurich have all released policies and guidance documents on the matter.
We’ve already discussed the need for detection and why Linear Heat Detection is the best fit, but now we’re going to explore which type of LHD, and tools are most suited for these complex applications.
Why Fixed Temperature Linear Heat Detection?
The two types of LHD we typically see are ‘Fixed Temperature Activation’ and ‘Programmable Temperature’. Both types offer continuous detection along the entire cable length, allowing hotspots to be detected directly at their source, whether on the solar panel itself or at one of the connectors. They also benefit from being easy to install, flexible with different system designs, and remain reliable in harsh conditions where standard point detection would not.
For Solar PV applications, the installations can be vast across large rooftops, or covering a wide area in a solar farm, so being able to know where the hotspots are located before a fire starts is key.
Fixed Temperature LHD, as the name suggests, triggers an alarm when heat reaches a specific pre-defined threshold anywhere along its length. The cable is made up of two-core cables coated in a temperature-sensitive polymer that melts when said temperature is met, causing an irreversible alarm. This type of detection can also come with distance locating. Once the cable is activated, it is possible to see how far along the cable the activation occurred, thus being able to locate where the issue is. This technology is as close to an addressable solution you will find with LHD on the market. The fast response and ability to locate the trigger point makes it the perfect solution for high-risk, long-distance applications where rapid detection is critical – such as floating and fixed roof storage tanks, cable trays, and of course solar PV applications.
Introducing ProReact Fixed Activation
ProReact Fixed Activation was designed by Thermocable specifically to meet the needs of the European market requirements, and in doing so introduced the first EN54-28 certified linear heat detection system to Europe in 2016. Since then, further developments and innovations have been made, introducing a lower-temperature activating cable in 2023.
Designed Specifically for Challenging Environments
Installed close to the source of ignition such as cables, connectors and junction boxes, ProReact Fixed Temperature detects heat at the source, helping identify problems before a fire can spread. This makes it an ideal solution for rooftop arrays and large-scale solar farms where access is limited, and traditional detection methods are often ineffective.
Long detection zones reduce the number of devices required, helping simplify installation, reduce infrastructure costs and protect larger areas with fewer components.
Built for demanding outdoor environments, ProReact Fixed Temperature has no moving parts, keeping maintenance to a minimum. Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) outer sheathing is supplied as standard, with the option to add stainless-steel braided sleeving for enhanced protection where additional durability is required against environmental factors or animal damage.
Compatible with both conventional and addressable fire alarm systems and backed by internationally recognised approvals including EN54 and UL, ProReact Fixed Temperature gives specifiers and installers confidence that their solar PV projects are protected by a proven detection solution.
Solving more than just fire protection
As solar PV systems become larger and more complex, fire detection is no longer the only consideration when selecting a Linear Heat Detection system. Modern installations contain inverters, optimisers and high-current DC cabling, all of which contribute to an electrically noisy environment.
When installed correctly, with suitable grounding and insulation, Linear Heat Detection systems should not create electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues. However, the reality is that not every installation is perfect. In electrically complex environments, unwanted interference can occur, sometimes affecting other building systems connected to the same electrical infrastructure. In some cases, this has resulted in issues such as automatic doors operating incorrectly due to ground loops created within the installation.
Rather than treating this as an installation problem alone, Thermocable has developed a solution that helps reduce the risk from the outset.
ProReact Fixed Temperature cable is now supplied with foil shielding as standard. The shielding is designed to remove the possibility of creating ground loops, reducing the potential for the detection cable to contribute to electromagnetic interference without affecting its fire detection performance.
The result is a Linear Heat Detection cable that maintains the durability, flexibility and environmental protection expected for outdoor solar applications, while providing greater confidence when installed alongside sensitive electrical equipment.
For designers, installers and building owners, it means one less consideration when specifying fire detection on electrically demanding sites, helping deliver reliable fire protection while supporting the wider performance of the building's electrical systems.
